Vila Flor Palace
A nobleman of Guimarães built the 18th century Vila Flor Palace, which had the honour of receiving Queen D. Maria II on the occasion when Guimarães was elevated to the rank of town. The Palace hosted the 1st Industrial and Commercial Exhibition of Guimarães, in 1884. Acquired by the Guimarães City Hall in 1976, with the interior already suffering some decay, the building temporarily served as one of the University of Minho campi, with part of the surroundings as the Municipal Garden. The Palace underwent a series of transformations by the City Hall, dividing its interior space to house the University of Minho at first and then a music school and professional training facilities. The garden spaces of the Vila Flor Palace, on its north façade, are considered the best in the region. The Memórias Paroquiais of 1750 refer to this 18th century Palace as being “admirable for its architecture and in the grandeur and scope of its garden,” being today remodelled and equipped as the Vila Flor Cultural Centre (CCVF). The Cultural Centre incorporates the 18th century Vila Flor Palace and brings together the rich history of a manor house, its magnificent gardens and lovely architecture, evoking the ideas of ancestral memories, with touches of modernity via the new theatre wing. The theatre wing is a totally new building, designed to hold all types of cultural events. All the resources are optimized in order to provide the highest quality facilities and spaces. The Vila Flor Cultural Centre has broadened the cultural and socio-economical life of Guimarães, offering unique facilities for organizing and holding important events. In terms of facilities, the Vila Flor Cultural Centre comprises two auditoriums, four rooms, two foyers for exhibitions, coffee space services, a restaurant and a Café Concerto bar.
